In this article I’m going to cover some of the more popular Japanese games that you might enjoy playing. This is by no means an in depth list, but it’s a quick overview of some of the more popular Japanese game titles. Some of these are quite localized, some of them aren’t. Either way, you should be able to find at least one game you’ll like from this list. Let’s get started.
It’s fairly easy to think of games like Pokemon when thinking about Japanese games. Pokemon is one of the most popular games in Japan. I’m sure you’ve seen the popular Japanese movie series based on it. Pokemon has a huge fan base in the United States and Europe. A great example of a Japanese game related to Pokemon would be the Pokemon Black and White video game and the various cards based Pokemon games.
Pokemon Black and White is one of many games based on the hit movie. The Japanese culture has a big influence on this series of video games as well. Many of the Japanese characters in the game are based on famous historical figures. For example, you have Czarnet, which is a reference to the Roman Catholic Church and the Sito-Kami, which are a reference to the founder of Shintoism, Sesshoumaru Seishi. There are a lot of different references and inspirations that you can draw from when considering Japanese video games.
Another popular Japanese game title is Katamari Damacy. This is another video game based on a Japanese story. If you’ve never heard of Katamari Damacy before, it’s a game you should definitely check out. It’s a fun action and adventure game that’s well done.
Finally, if you’re looking for something completely different from the above list, I recommend checking out the Japanese version of Doraemon. There is even a TV show based on the anime that you can enjoy. The good thing about the Japanese version is that the characters look completely realistic, unlike their American counterparts. Although the main character, which is called Niji is not particularly likeable, he is still funny and you can tell that he is a Japanese person.
The above list is by no means conclusive. As I said before, there are so many different Japanese video games that it would be impossible to make a proper list for everyone. However, this should give you a good place to start. Japanese traditional Japanese games have influenced the video game industry. And with more Japanese companies are creating new games every year, it’s only going to get easier and more exciting. Just remember: when playing traditional Japanese games, always remember to play them with someone who speaks English, or at least can read/pronounce the words.
